Hunts Point Lifelines: Food Supply Resilience

This solution addresses food supply chain and underserved communities at risk in the New York Metropolitan Region for Hunts Point businesses, employees of the Food Distribution Center, the food economy, at-risk South Bronx residents, and everyone who depends upon the region's food supply.

Problem Description

The peninsula of Hunts Point represents the intersection of local and regional infrastructure vulnerable to the physical and socio-economic effects of climate change. At risk here is the hub of the food supply for 22 million people, a $5B annual economy, over 10,000 direct jobs, and livelihoods of residents in the poorest Congressional District in the U.S. A new way of protecting the food economy from climate change combines industrial planning with leaders in community environmental action, and labor to co-produce waterfront protection and energy security for this hub of the food supply chain. The project utilizes living shoreline systems, modular design, microgrid and green infrastructure envisioning a next-generation working waterfront, working community, and working ecology.

Story

Intense, sustained engagement produced a broad coalition of support for Lifelines as a shared vision for a thriving economic hub tied to a healthy community and ecology. The plan recognizes living-wage jobs as a critical piece of resilience infrastructure and calls for a culture shift that brings businesses, community organizations, and government together to co-produce resilience. The three major markets and leaders of organized labor locals endorsed the project as essential to the viability of the Food Distribution Center. Many leaders in city, borough, state, and federal agencies helped shape the proposal. Bronx Community Board 2 and many non-profit organizations endorsed the plan as a step to improve the quality of life and create jobs, environmental justice, and climate security.
